High in the Dolomites, at six hundred metres above sea level, Alex Della Vecchia grows a patchwork of grapes most people have never heard of. His Pedecastello Bianco is built from equal parts local Bianchetta and roughly a dozen half-forgotten hybrid varieties, all planted together on steep alluvial marl near the banks of the River Piave. The grapes are pressed straight to tank and left to rest until spring — no shortcuts, no intervention, just time.

The result is a wine that smells like the place it comes from: wild flowers, a thread of honey, and a cold, mineral clarity that tastes uncannily like spring water after a hike through the mountains.

Alex learned his craft at Costadilà under the late Ernesto Cattel, one of the great guardians of old-style Prosecco, before starting his own project, Ombretta Agricola, in 2017. Working tiny parcels across three sites in the Veneto, he favours obscure indigenous grapes and forgotten hybrids over anything fashionable — his goal is simple: pure, nourishing wine for drinking every day, not for showing off.

Pedecastello is named after the winding road that threads through the mountains where these vines grow. It's a small production from a big talent, and this bottle is one of the clearest expressions of why.
